Here is why you hate sales
And you lost the interview to a straight out of college beautiful young girl with not even half of your experience and talent. Now you are blaming it on discrimination and how unfair life is. Wake up and smell the slap in the face and welcome to real life. Here is the solution for next time: Sales! Yuk! You hate that word because you have no idea what it means. They don't teach it in college and it doesn't matter how much you read about it, you won't get good at it until you keep doing it. But if you knew just a little bit about sales, you could've gotten that job.

What is your definition of sales?
Most people believe sales is about convincing someone to buy something they don't need, taking people's money and never get to see them again. You might have 20 years of experience in "sharing" something that makes you money and tell me that the difference between what you do and sales, is the relationship building, so its not sales! Whatever you want to say that makes you feel like you are not selling, is ok with me.

What sales is!
Here is my definition of sales; Represent something you believe in that you know will provide value to someone's life. Something that you are willing to share, explain how it will benefit them, show them the support they need, build a strong relationship, so they can continuously buy it from you. If you do all those things, your report card will be a check with your name written on it. Selling something you don't believe in and won't ever benefit anyone but yourself, is the definition of a scam!

Some people make hundreds of dollars, some people make millions and that is why a sales job can be considered the highest paid job in the United States of America. What does this have to do with your interview? Good sales training involves developing yourself, engaging speech skills, learning to be likable, leadership, humor, storytelling, overcoming objections and fear, great presentations skills and a contagious behavior so your prospects buy YOU first and then whatever you are selling. In this case, your service to the company.

Example of what you do everyday!
"Oh I don't think I can do that. That's too hard!" Sure it is! And The King of Sales himself would say: "People don't do the hard work it takes to make selling easy". Let me show you an example: Your walking with your friend, something unusual happens and you say: "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to get". Your friends says: "Wow that is clever where did you get that from?" You say: "What? That's from Forrest Gump, Hello!" Then he says: "Well, I've never seen that movie". And you say: "It is like the best movie in the world and make sure you watch it with your lady because she'll love you for it. At least for the rest of the night!" Your friend comes back the next day, thanks you and says: "That was great! What else do you have?"

Learn how to sell, and benefit!
In the previous example, you came up with engaging powerful words to created interest, recommended something that you believed and without a doubt knew it would bring great value to someone you have built a relationship with, they where ecstatic about it and came back to you for more. Not only does this works for selling products, it works for selling yourself. So next time you are competing against a visual perfect 10 and you know that YOU and what you got are a better fit for whatever your prospect needs, learn how to sell not only what you offer, but also yourself, so that there is no question that YOU are the one they are looking for.
