The Red Effect
In a world where jobs are scarce and you won't work unless you get paid what you say you are worth, what kind of value are you offering to those you are submitting your applications to? Probably just about the same as everyone else that is applying to your same position. Are you submitting the application, crossing your fingers and calling the office by saying: "I'm just calling to see if you received my application and to know the status."

Red Hughes
Meet Red! Red is a charismatic, sweet and talented artist. Like millions of Americans, she was looking for an opportunity to work. Instead of going to a job-posting website where thousands of people apply for the job you want, and the one chosen didn't even submit an application, but knew someone on the inside, Red decided to take a different approach.

The struggle
Red started following local companies on Facebook. Have you heard of Facebook yet? Not only did she learn about what projects these companies were doing due to their posts, she started interacting with them. As she identified who the key players and decision makers were, she started sharing her talents by critiquing work and speaking their "language". Red identified with one company in particular and started building a "Facebook relationship". Every time that company displayed work on Facebook, Red was there to give her positive input. And every time the company accomplished something, Red was there to congratulate them.

Finally Red got her interview, but she was not successful. At the time, other artists were chosen that cost the company less, they were younger and a better fit for the job. Red persisted and kept building the relationship. A second interview happened and once again, she was not chosen due to the same reasons. And so, most people would've gone to the corner and cried, but Red kept her smile and resilience.

The Red Effect
Here comes the plot twist! Red knew she was the perfect fit for the company and said: "I'll make you and offer you can't refuse". Red offered to work for free! She offered her years of experience to the company at no cost as a way to get in and reveal the need for her. Not only did she offer to work for free, she referred a prospect and found them a client!!! That's so awesome! I'm labeling this approach as the "Red Effect". Boom! Have you brought a prospect for someone you want to work for?

Today Red works for that company, she gets paid, everyone loves her and she is scheduled to work for a huge client. You might know him as a little mouse with black ears. Red also found out that there is another employee in that company that was hired thanks to Facebook. Have you created your Facebook account? Do you realize yet the amount of opportunities you are missing to sell yourself because you are not active on Facebook or you think it is just a "fad"?

What about you?
"Well, good for her, but I won't ever do that". You might think you are hot stuff and you won't work unless you get paid the thousands of dollars you say you deserve and probably wouldn't pay if someone with your talent and expertise came to you. And as you follow your pride, someone else comes with much greater value to offer and steals what you swore was your gig. Have you ever heard of: "Use it free for 30 days"? In times like these, you'll have to get creative. What value can you offer to make you stand out among all the others?
