What are your intentions when you use social media? Are you trying to attract people by letting them know you are about to take a shower, or about to go to sleep and wish everyone good night? Or are you trying to build interest around your business to make more sales? Whatever your reason might be, every time you post a thought, an opinion, an event, a picture, a video or a link, you are promoting something. YOU! Who you are!
After 10 years of working in the Entertainment and Marketing industry, ViSalus Co-Founder Blake Mallen explained what "branding" is, in the simplest way I've ever heard. "How do people feel about you?". Whether you are referring to a person or a business, start asking yourself: "How do people feel about me?" and that is your "brand". Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Youtube are the perfect tools to make people fall in love with your "brand", or in other words: YOU. Ten years ago people would pay millions of dollars for what social media enables us to do today. And guess what? It is free! You do have to invest your time to build your brand on social media, but it will pay back in a huge way.
Do you want to profit by using social media? Of course you do! Why not? Social Media is the perfect way to find and interact with solid targeted prospects. That is why every major company has taken a deep dive into Social Media. Thanks to Social Media, before you contact someone, you know everything about them. What they like, what they don't like, their dreams, goals, their friends and what their friends like. Try finding that type of information by cold calling them. Know this - you are not going to make a transaction on Facebook. But what you will do is provide value, build interest and interact with people that will buy from you. I've earned dozens of sales because of what I posted on Facebook, twitter, etc. Become the person with the most valuable information. Don't let your competition provide more value than you in what you do through social media – especially when it's free!
Let me help you by telling you this. If you are not a celebrity or a female whose body can be on a Victoria Secret's catalog, chances are people will not care if you are going to the beach or about to have dinner with your friends. So if you are not either one of those, avoid posting things like that. Be interesting! How do you do that? Every time you post something, ask yourself: "Would it interest me to know about this if someone else posted it?" Use the free tools that can increase your viewers; tools such as twollow, socialoomph, twitterfeed, bit.ly and more. Learn about these tools and use them to increase your social media presence.
The Social Media era is just beginning. Get your toes in the water because through social media, you will engage with customers directly, get their feedback and you will be growing your online presence and your brand by the value of your posts. How often should you post? Every day!
